Fitzroy

Fitzroy are premiers. The side that limped into fourth with the worst percentage of the four has gone and won the whole thing. Two months of being called the least convincing team in the finals, and they turn up in the last fortnight to dismantle the Cheats and then the Pirates. Mediocre for twenty-two rounds, ruthless for two. Pure Money in the Bank - hang about in the rafters doing nothing all year, then cash in on an exhausted champion and walk out with the belt. Logan Morris was the difference, 48 up forward on the biggest day of the year, with Georgiades alongside him for 31. The Pirates were undone by two names that returned nothing at all - Amiss up forward and Butters in the midfield, both non-plays, both holes that could not be covered. Brayshaw’s 48 in the tackle slot and Taranto’s 36 were heroic in a losing cause, but you cannot spot a grand final that sort of start. Fitzroy have done the thing every rival dreads. Peaking at precisely the right moment, having spent the year looking like they couldn’t. Ask Geelong how that feels in 92 and 94.
